Many people working in fire protection engineering and blueprint detailing are only familiar with Class A fire-resistant windows, often confused about the role of Class B fixed fire-resistant windows. Some even assume all indoor fire-resistant windows are Class A, leading to inflated costs or incorrect model selection that fails inspection. In fact, within the entire building fire protection system, Class B fixed fire-resistant windows are the most widely applicable, cost-effective, and widely used main fire-resistant window type. Understanding their application scope and performance differences can avoid most selection pitfalls.
This product uses a fixed structure, with no operable sashes or opening/closing hardware. There are no handles, locks, or temperature-controlled automatic window closing devices; the window sash and frame are completely sealed and fixed. This seemingly simple structure offers significant fire protection advantages, completely eliminating problems such as aging, jamming, and malfunction of moving parts. It maintains a constant airtight state year-round, exhibits extremely high fire resistance stability, requires almost no maintenance, and is a preferred fire-resistant component with a low failure rate.
Structural And Material Specifications
Window Frame Profiles
Typically made of high-quality cold-rolled galvanized steel sheet, with surface treatment including phosphate varnishing or electrostatic spraying for corrosion resistance. To ensure structural stability and resistance to deformation, the thickness of the window frame material is generally not less than 1.2mm. Materials with poor fire resistance, such as PVC, are not recommended.
Hardware Accessories
All hardware accessories must not burn or ash at temperatures reaching 980℃, and must be resistant to acid and alkali corrosion in daily environments, with a weight change rate of less than 6%. For Class B Fixed Fire-Resistant Windows, the frame is usually steel, galvanized or stainless steel depending on your budget. The national standard for fixed window steel frames generally requires a thickness of ≥1.2mm. Don't be misled into thinking it's too thin; the frame isn't empty, it needs to be filled with fire-resistant material, usually fire-resistant perlite board or rock wool. If it's filled with foam or left empty, it will definitely collapse in a fire.
Fire-resistant Glass
This product must be equipped with composite fire-resistant glass (such as multi-layer composite fire-resistant glass or grouted composite fire-resistant glass) with good high-temperature insulation performance to meet the insulation requirements of Class A fire-resistant windows.
Sealing Materials
High-quality nylon thermal insulation strips and fire-expanding fire-resistant rubber strips must be selected. PVC materials should be avoided as much as possible to ensure good smoke blocking, heat insulation, and energy-saving insulation effects in high-temperature environments.
The glass is the most crucial part
Don't expect to get away with using single-pane cesium potassium glass; that's for Class C (non-insulating). Class B belongs to Class A (insulating), and must use composite insulated fire-resistant glass, typically 24–32mm thick. This glass is very heavy, and the middle layer foams up to insulate when exposed to fire. If someone tells you that a thin monolayer of glass can provide 60 minutes of insulation, they're absolutely lying.
The application scenarios are also quite clear
Stairwells, evacuation corridors, or near the refuge room in a residence. In some areas, only fire resistance and heat insulation are needed, without ventilation, so a fixed window is just right. During installation, remember to instruct the customer to seal any gaps with fire-retardant sealant or expanding foam strips; never use ordinary expanding foam, as it will burn out.
In short, the Class B Fixed Fire-Resistant Window is not a cheap, filler fire-resistant component, but a complete fire-resistant and heat-insulating product certified to national standards. Its stable fixed structure, robust one-hour fire resistance performance, and wide adaptability make it perfectly suited for most ordinary fire compartments. In non-high-risk building fire protection scenarios, its balanced performance and high cost-effectiveness achieve a balance of compliance, safety, and economy, making it an indispensable basic safety configuration in building fire protection engineering.
