Class A fire-resistant windows typically consist of a steel or wood frame, composite insulated fire-resistant glass, and hardware. Specifically, they include:
Frame and Filling
Constructed from high-quality steel (such as cold-rolled galvanized steel sheet), the frame is filled with cement mortar or non-combustible insulating materials (such as perlite fire-resistant core board, rock wool, etc.) to effectively prevent heat transfer.
Fire-resistant Glass
Often uses grouted composite fire-resistant glass or multi-layer laminated fire-resistant glass, which can both block flames and provide heat insulation and light transmission.
Sealing System
A fire-expanding sealing strip is installed between the frame and the glass, ensuring air tightness at room temperature and rapidly expanding to seal gaps during a fire, preventing the penetration of toxic fumes.
Opening and Closing Function
Operable fire-resistant windows must have the function of automatically closing during a fire and are equipped with a temperature-controlled release device and smoke sealing performance.
According to general fire resistance testing standards, Class A Fire-Resistant Windows are classified as Class A insulated components with a fire resistance rating of A1.5. This means that under standard combustion test conditions, they pass both integrity and insulation tests simultaneously for 90 consecutive minutes. Ordinary fire-resistant windows that only possess integrity can only block open flames and dense smoke; high-temperature heat radiation can directly penetrate the glass and ignite flammable materials such as fabrics and boards inside the room in a short time. In contrast, Class A Fire-Resistant Windows limit the temperature of the unexposed side, preventing heat from spreading outwards and causing secondary fires, thus providing ample safe time for evacuation and firefighting. This is the core difference between Class A and exterior fire-resistant windows. The products are available in two main types: fixed and operable, to suit different building space needs. Fixed fire-resistant windows have no opening or closing hardware, are completely sealed, and eliminate the risk of component aging and failure. They are suitable for machine rooms and partition walls where ventilation is not required for extended periods. Openable models allow for daily ventilation and can be equipped with temperature-controlled release devices or fire-activated electric window closing devices. In the event of a fire, they automatically close and lock, balancing daily comfort with emergency protection. Both models retain A1.5 heat insulation and fire resistance performance; the openable design does not reduce the protection level.
Fire-resistant windows are mandatory in the following locations: interior firewalls, oil/gas engine rooms, electrical equipment rooms, warehouses storing flammable materials, fire anterooms, refuge areas, and atrium fire-resistant partition walls. For exterior facades and exterior lighting areas, only fire resistance integrity is required; ordinary fire-resistant windows are sufficient, and there is no need to waste budget on high-cost Class A windows.
Each batch of products comes with a corresponding fire resistance test certificate, and the performance data is verifiable and accurate, without any vague or exaggerated parameter labeling. It meets the fire safety audit standards of most countries. Many low-priced alternatives omit the insulation layer structure and only imitate the appearance, which not only fails local fire inspections but also creates long-term safety hazards for the entire building.
