Steel doesn't lose much strength below 600 degrees Celsius, making it currently the only frame material that can reliably produce Class A (1.5 hours) and Class B (1 hour) insulated windows.

 

Its structure is quite straightforward: a hollow cavity formed by pressing cold-rolled steel sheets, with a wall thickness generally between 1.2mm and 2.0mm (depending on the class), filled with fire-resistant perlite or aluminum silicate wool - it absolutely cannot be hollow. For the glass, export orders mostly use composite fire-resistant insulated glass (Class A), which is the multi-layered laminated type; when burning, the middle layer foams, blocking the heat.

 

 

 

As a key component of passive fire protection systems in buildings, steel fire-resistant windows have a wide range of applications, from residential buildings to high-risk industrial settings. In high-rise residential buildings and large commercial complexes, it is primarily used for fire separation in stairwells, refuge floor windows, and atriums to prevent the upward spread of fire.

1. Stable fire resistance stems from standardized structural configurations.

Compliant products are made of thickened steel plates, integrally pressed and formed, resulting in high overall rigidity and excellent resistance to deformation. The interior of the profile cavity is filled with high-density fire-resistant and heat-insulating filler, effectively blocking heat conduction; the window frame is equipped with a special fire-resistant expansion sealing strip that rapidly expands when exposed to high temperatures, sealing all tiny seams and preventing smoke and flame penetration. Paired with compliant composite fire-resistant glass, it provides dual protection of fire resistance integrity and heat insulation, preventing secondary fires caused by high-temperature heat radiation.

2. And then there's installation.

Many construction sites think steel windows are sturdy and that applying some expanding foam is enough. This is utter nonsense. The space between the steel frame and the wall must be sealed with fire-resistant putty or a heat-expanding sealing strip. Expanding foam is plastic; it turns to ash when burned. What's the use if the wall collapses but the window is still there?

3. These things are incredibly heavy, making transportation a laborious task and more expensive than other materials.

But that's also its advantage: cheap, durable, and compliant. Whether you're building a shopping mall or a high-rise residential building, as long as fire safety regulations are strict, steel fire-resistant windows are always the safest choice. They may not be flashy, but they won't fail you in a critical moment. That's probably why this old relic hasn't been phased out yet.
